Finish carpentry needs a good eye, a framing carpenter’s job is to make the house plumb, level, and square. Or not, a reputable framer should be able to ease the finish carpenter’s job by providing them with plumb walls and plenty of blocking for nailers to attach the trim. Or not. A finish carpenter’s job is to make all the doors, windows, and cabinets work, and to provide superior carpentry construction projects.

Perfect miters are only a small part of finish carpentry, which is why a finish carpenter must develop a good eye for proportion and detail. They need to learn how to visualize the steps that lead to a finished product.

Avoid using numbers

Try not to measure: It is more accurate to mark trim in place than it is to measure and then transfer the numbers. This is because it is too easy to misread a ruler or to confuse numbers while going to the saw. It is more accurate to hold a board in place to mark its length instead of using tape and involve numbers. Sometimes, using a ruler or tape will be unavoidable though.

A rigid ruler is better than using a tape for measuring lengths that are under 6 ft.; hence, the 6-ft. folding wooden rule takes over during the trim and cabinet stages. The best folding rules come with a sliding brass extension, this makes it easier to take inside measurements easy. Open the rule to the longest it will open and fit it between the points to be measured, and slide out the brass extension if necessary. Hold it at this, and carry it to the board to be cut. This eliminates the need for numbers, all that is needed is to mark the board from the extended ruler.
